Yikes! I've been away for a while due to a very recent cross-crountry move to Switzerland.
This little lass is in Ireland no more. So far, Switzerland is fantastic - I think I am in love ;)

The radio show is hosted and produced by artist and animal activist, Thomas Janak. The show is on every week via 106.8fm (Tamworth) and globally via www.tcrfm.co.uk.

Wild Time advocates on behalf of animals and conservation world-wide. The show has been running globally since February 2008.

It was a great pleasure to be featured on the show regarding my M.Sc. research in the field of ecology last Spring. I have been tuning in each week as the show has great guestspeakers and discussions, which I am sure you will enjoy. Last Monday included an inspiring interview with Matt Ellerbeck from "Save the Pirahnas."

I donated some mini-prints and coupons for my Etsy shop for these holiday bags. There are only 25 of the prints, and they have been signed, numbered, and titled.

I submitted it as part of the team's monthly challenge theme, which is "Bountiful Harvest". How did I link sea turtles with this theme?

Here's my explanation: "I decided to go with the sea turtle pendant - their eggs were "harvested" by poachers until almost extinction (on top of other man-made causes) and now researchers are scrambling to harvest the eggs in the same way but for a different reason - to save them. They keep them in safe areas and release them once they hatch. So, here's to a successful harvest of eggs, which may lead to the bountiful numbers of hatchlings and releases into the ocean for many, many years to come until sea turtle populations are back in strong numbers!"

I am so excited that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) was chosen as Team EFA's Charity of the Month! They are such a great organization. I nominated them and was beyond thrilled when they were picked for this month's COTM this November!

My background is in marine biology/conservation, and it tears me apart to know that the oceans are in such disaray because of human activities. SSCS is one of those no nonsense and no excuses type conservation groups, which I really admire. I am pretty new to EFA and another fellow member suggested we nominate SS, so I went for it too as my first charity nomination!

Sadly, there are only about 100,000 to 200,000 chimps left in the wild. Jane Goodall (2001) proclaimed chimpanzees among the most threatened primates in Africa as they have already become extinct in four of their previously habitated countries.

The main threats that chimpanzees face is:
-The expansion of agricultural and living space for the human population
-Industrial logging
-Bush fires
-Poaching for bushmeat
-The live capture of young chimpanzees for the pet trade

Extinction may be around the corner or maybe not. It's up to each and every one of us to speak up against the plight of any species which is in danger of disappearing due to human-made causes.

Most of us will have only encountered chimpanzees in unnatural settings. Be it zoos, circuses, etc...but these are not a solution to a very serious problem. Apart from keeping these animals in unnatural small settings and even abusing them, these institutions do nothing to help matters in the chimp's natural habitat, which itself is disappearing with every passing day.

Write to your decision/law makers and let them know you care about the fate of chimpanzees and all wildlife. Ask them to stop the wildlife and pet trade. Support legislation that helps wildlife and continue to educate yourself on these matters. Educate others on what you know - knowledge is no good if it is not shared.

Article: Rats Laugh & Turtles Play!

Non-human animals really aren't that different than humans!

Jake Richardson, Care2, reports that a study has found that rats have their own way of laughing. Although not surprising to animal lovers, this study could be the first one to actually measure pleasure in animals other than humans.

Play in animals has also been shown by researchers in several species. As in humans, "play has benefits such as learning skills, maintaining physical and mental fitness, and improving social relationships."

"Until they are all free" is the quote on the NARA Campaigns inspired dove pendant by artist Julia Feliz. The dove in flight represents the spirit of all non-humans still living under human slavery. The pendant was made in aid of NARA campaigns, an Ireland based group that works to help all non-humans in need and will continue to do so "until they are all free". The pendants are also a great conversation starter with those that might not be yet aware of the plight of animals.

Each dove pendant measures about 3.5cm and is handmade to order. Each pendant also comes with a color choice of glass bead to be added to the pendant - for further details please see www.jfillustrations.com.

Each pendant is on sale for €15 ($19), and 50% of each sale from this pendant will go to NARA Campaigns and to kick off this special pendant, Julia will also donate 15% of her sales from the "Go Vegan" Rooster pendant to NARA as well for the next month (20th Oct to 20th November). All you have to do is mention NARA in your message while ordering.
